CSM Julie Small was born in Salinas, California and raised in Alaska where she enlisted in the Alaska Army National Guard in March 1995. She completed Army Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Clerk Typist Advanced Individual Training as well as Personnel Service Sergeant Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
