JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Pilot Cadet Larry Campbell's official photo is likely from sometime in 1945. Campbell was discharged at the end of World War II before he completed training, but he would earn his wings in 1948 and ultimately become the first black jet fighter pilot and AIr National Guard group commander of 176th Tactical Airlift Group, Alaska Air National Guard.
