A sheep hunter suffering from minor cold weather injuries and malnourishment found himself stranded for two days at 5,750 feet on a three-by-three-foot ledge on a 50-degree slope near Cottonwood Creek in the Knik River Valley, Sept. 15, 2021. The Alaska Army National Guard’s Golf Company, Detachment 1, 2-211th General Aviation Support Battalion received his distress signal and rescued him in a hoist-capable HH-60M Black Hawk helicopter. Members of the Alaska Army National Guard returned home on Christmas Eve , Dec. 24, 2021, after a nine-month deployment to the U.S. Central Command Area of Operations in support of Operation Spartan Shield. Sixty-four Alaska Army Guardsmen from elements of the 1st Battalion, 168th General Support Aviation, departed in March 2021, along with four of the unit’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. While deployed, they directly supported casualty evacuation, troop movement, and resupply for U.S. and allied forces in various locations in the Middle East. Chief Master Sergeant Christopher F. Wilson is the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Alaska National Guard, headquartered on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He represents the highest level of enlisted leadership and oversees the combat readiness, effective utilization, professional growth, health and welfare for over 4,100 throughout the state, and federal missions worldwide. He serves as a special staff advisor and critical link between the Adjutant General and all matters affecting the enlisted force and their families.
