DCNG Governor Escort Mission for former President George H.W. Bush
DC National Guard
Dec. 5, 2018 | 1:04
Members of the District of Columbia National Guard ensured the "safe and secure" travel of 18 governors who attended the U.S. state funeral for former President George H.W. Bush, Dec. 5. The D.C. National Guard worked closely with the White House, U.S. Secret Service and the National Governors Security Association. The Governor Escort Mission was part of a national special security event (NSSE) that required 18 months planning and preparation in the event of an unexpected death of a President or other event of national significance, according to Maj. Mark Ballantyne, a D.C. National Guard member and mission planner. Within hours of the former president's death, members of the D.C. National Guard were activated. Guard members provided motorcade travel, security and escort support to visiting governors. They were also responsible for ensuring all visiting governors signed an official condolence book that will be on display at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
