U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Hicklin, a heavy equipment operator assigned to the 172nd Engineer Battalion, South Carolina Army National Guard, speaks about his unit’s participation in Vigilant Guard. Soldiers with the 172nd Engineer Battalion, operate a 2.5 yard scoop loader to load an M-916 tractor truck with fill dirt in Walterboro, S.C., during Vigilant Guard, March 7, 2015. The fill dirt will be used to reinforce roads connecting Bear Island to the mainland in preparation for hurricane season and storms. Vigilant Guard is a series of federally funded disaster-response drills conducted by National Guard units working with federal, state and local emergency management agencies and first responders.
