AFTT Sonar and Explosives
Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command
May 26, 2017 | 2:43
170526-N-N0701-0004 NORFOLK, Va. (May 26, 2017) A poster video created for the public review and comment period for the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) draft environmental impact statement (EIS) highlights the importance of U.S. Navy to conduct training with both passive and active sonar, which is vital to equip and maintain combat-ready forces. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, U.S. Fleet Forces Command assessed the potential environmental impacts associated with conducting safe, yet realistic training for Sailors, and testing systems within the AFTT study area, which consists of approximately 2.6 million square nautical miles of open waters and designated airspace over the Atlantic Ocean along the eastern coast of North America, the Gulf of Mexico, portions of the Caribbean Sea, and in specific inland waters.
