General Commemorates Pres. Hayes
88th Readiness Division
Oct. 7, 2012 | 1:39
A presidential memorial service for Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes held Oct. 7, 2012, in Fremont, Ohio. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt started the practice of having military representatives place wreaths on his behalf at areas outside Washington, D.C. Pres. Lyndon Johnson set the official tradition on Aug. 11, 1966. These annual placements of presidential wreaths are held on or near the birthdays of deceased presidents and particular dates for memorials at the burial sites of former presidents, other famous Americans, or certain memorials of historical significance. (U.S. Army motion imagery by Sgt. 1st Class Osvaldo Sanchez, 88th Regional Support Command Public Affairs) Soundbites from Eric Potter and Brig. Gen. Alton Berry. Also available in high definition
