U.S. Army Gen. Joseph Votel, U.S. Central Command commander, oversaw the transfer of authority ceremony between outgoing Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve commander, Army Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland to Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Aug. 21, 2016. Lt. Gen. Townsend, and the XVIII Airborne Corps out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, have taken control of the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant as Lt. Gen.
