Malmstrom AFB pilots, flight engineers attend first Grey Wolf Type 1 training
341st Missile Wing
Sept. 5, 2023 | 2:31
Members of the 40th and 550th Helicopter Squadrons attend Grey Wolf Type 1 training at Leonardo Helicopters Academy, Pennsylvania, Aug. 1 to Sept. 1, 2023.
The Type 1 training consists of three parts, the first of which is ground training, focusing on the different systems of the aircraft: hydraulics, electrical, engine, flight management, fuel, emergency systems, and the automatic flight-control systems. 10 days of the 32-day training are spent in the classroom where Airmen can only move on from the classroom portion after passing a 100-question cumulative exam. The third portion of the Type 1 training is a full-motion AW-139 simulator, where aircrew put their knowledge of all the aircraft systems to the test. They practice using the flight management system, auto pilot, flight director, radios, and general cockpit controls. (U.S. Air Force video by Senior Airman Breanna Christopher Volkmar)
