AFTT Navy Acoustic Effects Model (NAEMO)
Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command
May 26, 2017 | 1:58
170526-N-N0701-0006 NORFOLK, Va. (May 26, 2017) A poster video created for the public review and comment period for the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) draft environmental impact statement (EIS) highlights the Navy Acoustic Effects Model (NAEMO), which is an advanced modeling and simulation software tool that is used to assess the potential effects on marine life from training and testing using sonar and explosives. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, U.S. Fleet Forces Command assessed the potential environmental impacts associated with conducting safe, yet realistic training for Sailors, and testing systems within the AFTT study area, which consists of approximately 2.6 million square nautical miles of open waters and designated airspace over the Atlantic Ocean along the eastern coast of North America, the Gulf of Mexico, portions of the Caribbean Sea, and in specific inland waters.
